Siem Reap Angkor International Airport: A New Gateway to Cambodia’s Heritage
Published : 18 November 2025
A new era of travel to Cambodia is about to unfold with the opening of the Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport (SAI) Cambodia’s largest and most advanced international airport, built to welcome millions of visitors into the heart of Khmer civilization.
Located in Sot Nikum district, about 40 km from Angkor Wat, the new airport replaces the existing Siem Reap International Airport and will serve as a major travel hub for Siem Reap and Western Cambodia.
Why Was a New Airport Needed?
With Siem Reap’s tourism growing rapidly over the past two decades, the old airport simply couldn't handle the increasing number of travelers previously exceeding 10 million passengers per year. In response, the Cambodian government initiated the construction of a brand-new international airport in partnership with Chinese investors.
Beyond capacity concerns, there were environmental reasons too: Studies found that air pollution from the old airport posed a threat to Angkor Wat’s ancient sandstone carvings. Preserving Cambodia’s iconic World Heritage Site became a key driver behind relocating air traffic farther away.
What Travelers Can Expect
Built across 750 hectares at a cost of $880 million, the airport is being developed in three major phases, with the first phase already completed in October 2023. Here's what you can expect:
-
Modern Terminal with 15 aerobridges
-
Runway suitable for Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s
-
Future upgrades to handle widebody aircraft (Boeing 777, Airbus A350, etc.)
-
Capacity to serve 7–10 million passengers per year by 2030
-
Airport expressway connecting to Siem Reap city
This new gateway is designed to provide seamless access to Cambodia’s most iconic temples, beautiful countryside, and growing travel destinations like Tonlé Sap, Preah Vihear, and Battambang.
